STOP Dancing with your Girlfriend (and why!)

This is so true! Not to the extent that you should never dance with your honey, but you should definitely dance with as many different people as you can. I always tell my students to “dance up”. By that I mean dance with people who are at a higher skill level than you. In order to grow as a dancer, you need to step out of your comfort zone. #NoFear

There… I’ve said it. Let the hate mail roll on in.

Or, be reasonable and hear me out. I’ll explain exactly why your significant other is hampering your salsa evolution and what you can do about it without having to break up and go through that whole “uncomfortable” period of trying to avoid the dance socials they regularly attend (you all know what I’m talking about).

First things first, let me appease the ladies and say that I could just as easily have titled this article “Stop Dancing with your Boyfriend/Spouse/Life-Partner” or some other gender neutral BS. I didn’t because my regular readers are well aware that I like a nice controversial title every now and then. It should suffice to say that I’m talking about all significant others or regular dance partners in this article.

Tonya is a certified Red Belt in the Black Belt Salsa® dance system created by Edie the Salsa Freak. She is also a licensed Zumba®, Zumba Kids®, and Zumba® Sentao instructor as well as certified to teach Bokwa®, Devoted Fitness® and PiYo® Live. Tonya is now in the process of adding Licensed Massage Therapist to her list of certifications and is set to graduate February 2015. Tonya served in the US Air Force for 22 years where she performed aircraft maintenance on Avionics systems. She was also an Avionics Field Training Detachment Instructor, a Unit Training Manager, a Physical Training Leader and a Unit Fitness Program Manager.
